Why Elevation Changes Jetting
Carburetors meter fuel based on airflow, not air mass. As elevation increases, air gets thinner — less oxygen per given volume — so the same jet that was correctly tuned at sea level will deliver a relatively richer mixture at altitude, since it's still passing the same volume of (now thinner) air. Riding significantly higher than the elevation your bike was last jetted for typically means sizing the main jet down slightly to compensate; riding significantly lower usually means sizing back up.
As a rough guideline, air density drops roughly 3% for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain, which is the basis for the estimate above. Real-world results vary by carburetor, altitude, temperature, and humidity, which is why this should be treated as a starting point for trailside adjustment, not a final answer.
Signs You're Jetted Too Rich or Too Lean
- Too rich: black, sooty spark plug; excessive smoke; boggy throttle response; fouled plug after short rides.
- Too lean: white or very light-colored spark plug; engine pinging or surging; overheating; in severe cases, engine damage from detonation.
A proper plug chop — running the bike hard at a consistent throttle position, then killing the engine (not letting it idle down) and inspecting the plug color — remains the most reliable way to confirm jetting, especially after any significant elevation or temperature change.
