What "Compound" Actually Means
Compound refers to how hard or soft the rubber itself is. The tradeoff is wear: soft rubber grips better but abrades faster, especially on hardpack and abrasive ground. Hard compounds do the opposite — they last longer and stay predictable at speed, but need more heat and load to actually flex into a surface, which is why they can feel vague on cold, technical trail sections.

A "medium" compound in cool, 50°F morning conditions can ride firmer than its rating suggests, while that same tire in 95°F desert heat will run noticeably softer and wear faster than expected. If you ride in a climate with big temperature swings between morning and afternoon, or between seasons, it's worth having a slightly harder and slightly softer option in rotation rather than relying on one tire year-round.
Reading the Sidewall
Most dirtbike tires list a size like 90/100-21 or 110/90-19. The first number is the tire's width in millimeters, the second is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width), and the final number is the rim diameter in inches. Compound and intended terrain are usually printed as a model name or letter code (e.g., "Soft," "Intermediate," "MX") rather than a universal numeric standard, so cross-check the exact compound against the manufacturer's own terrain guide before buying — naming conventions aren't consistent brand to brand.
Ply rating (often listed as 4-ply or 6-ply) refers to carcass strength, not compound. A higher ply rating means a stiffer, more puncture- and pinch-resistant sidewall — important for rocky terrain regardless of which compound you choose.
